Hair Pulling/Skin Picking (BFRBs)

Trichotillomania (hair pulling) and Excoriation Disorder (skin picking) are Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) characterized by repetitive, compulsive behaviors. Trichotillomania involves the recurrent pulling out of one's hair, leading to hair loss, while Excoriation Disorder, also known as skin-picking disorder, involves the compulsive picking of one's skin, resulting in tissue damage. Both conditions are often driven by a need for tension relief or a sense of gratification. Treatment may include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and/or medication to address underlying issues and manage symptoms, promoting healthier coping mechanisms.
